Amazon has offered to help the Biden administration distribute the COVID-19 vaccine.
“As you begin your work leading the country out of the COVID-19 crisis, Amazon stands ready to assist you in reaching your goal of vaccinating 100 million Americans in the first 100 days of your administration,” Dave Clark, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer said in a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris issued Wednesday.
“We are prepared to leverage our operations, information technology, and communications capabilities and expertise to assist your administration’s vaccination efforts. Our scale allows us to make a meaningful impact immediately in the fight against COVID-19, and we stand ready to assist you in this effort.”
The letter also calls for vaccinating Amazon employees as soon as possible.
“The essential employees working at Amazon fulfillment centers, AWS data centers, and Whole Foods Market stores across the country who cannot work from home should receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the earliest appropriate time,” writes Clark.
Biden plans to invoke a wartime law to accelerate the pace of coronavirus vaccination in the U.S., the White House announced Thursday. He has vowed to get 100 million COVID-19 vaccinations to Americans in his first 100 days in office.
“The president has directed relevant agencies to exercise all appropriate authorities, including the DPA … to accelerate the manufacture, delivery and administration of COVID-19 vaccines,” states an executive summary of the Biden plan.
More than 407,000 people have died from the novel coronavirus in the U.S., and the country is nearing a total of 24.5 million coronavirus cases.
