President Donald Trump is taking more time to decide whether to enforce new sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia, as concerns grow over global energy prices and economic stability.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday, October 17, that the administration will use up to 60 days to evaluate the potential economic consequences. The announcement followed Trump’s decision Friday to waive measures established under the Graham Act.
The legislation aims to increase pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine. It includes sanctions on Russian exports and tariffs affecting countries that purchase Russian oil and gas.
Rubio explained that the review will consider the effects on both the U.S. and global economies, particularly as countries such as India remain dependent on Russian energy supplies.
The decision comes amid elevated fuel prices and disruptions to international oil markets.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several U.S. lawmakers have criticized the waiver, arguing that it reduces economic pressure on Russia.
Trump has not announced a final decision on implementing the measures.
