As controversy continues to grow around the issue of panhandling in the city, Mayor Jim Gray held a press conference to talk about a program that will address those concerns and help aide those who are truly in need.

A recent Kentucky Supreme Court decision announced that an ordinance to block begging is a violation of free speech. After the decision, Lexington has seen an increase in panhandlers at most of the city’s major intersection. In response, the city has announced that a new program called “Lex Gives” will provide job opportunities to panhandlers funded by online donations.  A van will drive around town and offer work to those who are panhandling. The program will pay $9 an hour for individuals who will do cleanup work around Lexington.
