(BGCF)–Blue Grass Community Foundation awarded $100,000 to 15 nonprofit organizations and schools serving Central Kentucky for projects focusing on literacy and early childhood education. These grants were made possible by the MacAdam Early Childhood and Literacy Fund at the Community Foundation. Applications for educational projects will again be accepted in July 2019.

Carnegie Center For Literacy and Learning, to support authors & books for kids, a free program for elementary-aged children that promotes a love of books and improves reading and writing skills.
Child Care Council of Kentucky Inc., for KinderPrep, an early childhood literacy initiative to foster literacy success.
College Mentors for Kids, to match 110 at-risk elementary school students from Lexington with mentors from the University of Kentucky for weekly literacy activities.
Common Good Community Development Corporation, for free ESL classes for adults and childcare with a literacy focus for their children in North Lexington.
Community Action Council, for Migrant Head Start LISTO, a book project supporting early literacy and adult ESL skills for Spanish-speaking seasonal workers in the Bluegrass.
Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky, for a summer enrichment program to increase reading retention for students between the ages of 8-11.
Fayette County Public Schools for the Read,Talk and Play from Cradle to Kindergarten program, to build language and vocabulary through increased interactions between young children and their parents and caregivers.
Foster Care Council of LexKY, for in-home, individualized tutoring for foster children K-12 testing below grade level.
Gateway Regional Arts Center, Mount Sterling, to provide students, families and the community with the opportunity to meet book authors.
Kentucky Humanities Council Lexington, for Prime Time, a humanities-centered family literacy program at Booker T. Washington and Tates Creek Elementary schools to help children and their families improve reading comprehension and enjoyment, to set the stage for lifelong learning.
Mentors & Meals, Versailles, which improves academic achievement in at-risk middle school students through a program that includes mentoring, homework help and hot meals, received funding to establish a book club to increase reading and comprehension skills.
The Nest – Center for Women, for respite child care for families in crisis.
The Salvation Army, to purchase curricula that develop children’s skills in literacy, math and art.
VIPS (Visually Impaired Preschool Services) to help prepare children who are blind or visually impaired for preschool.
YMCA of Central Kentucky for Power Scholars Academy, a free summer literacy/math learning experience for K-8 students.
